TEAM RJC Completes 8th Year of Riding to Conquer Cancer
- Details
Another season of riding to support cancer research across Canada wrapped up in August. Intrepid RJC teams participated in Ontario, Alberta, and BC this summer raising a combined total of $116,274. This was the eighth year that RJC has participated, having entered riders in 22 different Ride to Conquer Cancer (R2CC) events and raising an amazing overall total of $1.173 million to date.
The season started in June when four riders in Ontario donned the RJC colours to navigate the southern highways of the province. Then August 6/7 in Alberta saw a team of three this year: RJC Calgary Managing Principal Doug Little, team captain Darla Steers, and RJC Vancouver Managing Principal Roger Steers. The team was accompanied by Mike Russell of Metrix Insurance Brokers who continues incredible commitment in his photo documentation of the R2CC events for TEAM RJC. The Alberta event saw 1402 riders overall raise $6.35 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. The weekend was spectacular with perfect cycling weather - cool, overcast, and little to no wind!
Three weeks later, TEAM RJC was at it again in BC and Washington state with a team of 23, led by Roger Steers and joined again by Mike Russell for photography. This event saw 1687 riders raise $7.1 million for the BC Cancer Foundation.
There were so many memories, but one to make note of was the shaving of RJC Project Engineer Nicole Babuik’s hair at camp in front of over 1000 other riders. Nicole’s lengthy locks were donated to Wigs for Kids at BC Children’s Hospital. The shaving was documented in local media, and $1350 was raised on the spot for next year’s ride!
As we look forward to 2017, we already have 25 riders signed up and plenty of room for more to join us in Toronto, Calgary, or Vancouver. Thank-you to everyone that has ridden with, donated to, or participated with TEAM RJC in any other way. The names are many and your support is appreciated!
