UBC Marine Student Residences & Amenity Building
The University of British Columbia needed additional student housing to support the BC government’s desire to increase student enrollment.
The UBC Marine Student Residences was completed in two phases, comprising approximately 2,000 units, located in five buildings of varying heights as well as an amenity building and walkways, rendering it distinct from the other UBC housing residences.
The unique design features are most prevalent in the amenity building.
The one-storey wood structure includes a floor area of 14,500 sq. ft. and a 1,750 sq. ft. mezzanine.
In close collaboration with the architects, RJC facilitated the design of exposed timber structure. The main corridor with 7’ high clear-storey windows between the 28’ sloped high roof and the 18’ sloped low roof emulated the vision of the architect.
Detailed glulam beams, some in the form of trusses, together with glulam and timber log posts, provide an attractive visual presence amongst the multiple concrete and brick residence buildings on the campus.
