Ralph Klein Park & Environmental Education Centre
A major component of the 30 hectare Ralph Klein Legacy Park is the Environmental Education Centre which provides a learning environment for the public on wetlands, water issues, sustainability and environmental ethics and values.
The park includes the ‘Shepard Wetlands,’ a constructed wetland that provides a managed route for storm water.
Flowing through the wetlands, water is cleaned and filtered using the natural process that the wetlands provide.
The Environmental Education Centre is an important building in the large park and wetland setting.
The wetland location provided a unique structural challenge – the building is supported on slender columns above the wetland with no slab-on-grade or basement supporting the structure. The basement is the wetland and is accessible via a walkway just above the water level.
