Legends Centre
RJC faced the challenge of incorporating within the same building a swimming pool, a fitness centre and gymnasium, a library, administrative support areas, a suspended running track, and four pad hockey arenas that require a faultless ice surface.
We conceived a variety of structural systems to satisfy the aesthetic and practical demands of the recreation centre, while coordinating work for two separate architectural offices in joint venture.
A material palette consisting of steel, concrete, and glulam beams was designed to fit to a fully exposed structure, necessitating thoroughly detailed connections between the elements and very close work with the architects.
A central spine running through the building as an interior streetscape affords views into the activity spaces.
For the arenas, a system of light steel joists and joist girders was used for framing, while the aquatic centre was spanned with exposed curved steel trusses supported on a mix of elliptical hollow steel columns and architectural concrete walls.
