Hillcrest Centre
The legacy conversion of the Hillcrest Centre (formerly named the Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre), was completed in Fall 2011.
At 144,775 sq. ft., the Hillcrest Centre is the largest facility if its kind in the Vancouver Parks and Recreation system. This 2011 WoodWORKS!BC Wood Design Award winning design includes a 66,735 sq. ft. aquatic centre and 78,038 sq. ft. community centre.
The facility includes multiple interactive and engaging spaces for families and the community at large with a library, skating rink, curling rink, gymnasium and field team rooms.
RJC was engaged as both structural engineer and building envelope consultant for this facility which served as the official Curling Venue for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
Particular attention was given to developing a high performance, building envelope that was both energy efficient and provided an ideal environment for creating top-notch curling ice!Structurally, a diverse range of materials were incorporated into this project.Structural steel was used for the long-span roof structures in the Arena and Curling Club, while timber was used in the Aquatic Centre Natatorium.
The timber structure is proudly expressed by the wood deck on slightly curved glulam roof beams with seamlessly connected sloped glulam columns.
