Cape Sable Lighthouse Restoration

Originally built in 1861, the Cape Sable Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Nova Scotia, standing at 101 feet tall.

Located on Cape Sable Island the lighthouse is accessible only by boat and helps mark the most southern tip of the province.

The lighthouse’s concrete octagonal tower was in need of repair and environmental protection because of its susceptibility to moisture-related deterioration due to the harsh coastal weather conditions.

RJC was commissioned to provide structural restoration and rehabilitation consulting services aimed at extending the operational service life of the lighthouse.

Through targeted repairs to the concrete structure and the replacement of the elastomeric coating, RJC was able to address issues related to the premature deterioration and breakdown of the moisture protection systems of the structure.

Additionally, as Heritage Conservation specialists, RJC restored the lighthouse to its prominence and stature as a designated Federal Heritage Building Review Office (FHBRO) Classified Building.
