UBC’s Nexterra’s Bioenergy Research Demonstration Facility is an innovative, first of its kind, ‘Living Laboratory’ project that features the processing of renewable biomass to generate thermal energy for heating campus buildings and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption.

This facility incorporates the first commercial application of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in North America using local products made in British Columbia.

RJC provided Specialty Engineering services for the panels and connectors based on tests performed by UBC.

Being a sound wood building material applauded for its fire resistant properties and for being a low carbon, renewable alternative to steel frame and concrete construction, CLT was an appropriate fitting material to be showcased in this facility.

This project is LEED® Gold certified.
