Scotia Centre Parking Garage Rehabilitation
RJC has been the engineer of record for many significant rehabilitation projects at this 1969-built parking facility since 1994.
The parking structure was built as part of a combined commercial, retail, residential complex in downtown Halifax.Divided into two distinct areas, the North Pad is a five-level cast-in-place (formerly) post-tensioned concrete structure and the South Pad is a six-level cast-in-place normally reinforced concrete structure.
The parking facility has a total size of approximately 500,000 sq. ft. and provides parking for approximately 1,700 vehicles.
In 2008, RJC undertook an updated condition assessment of the post-tensioning system of the North Pad and determined that the load carrying capacity of the structure had been reduced due to corrosion related deterioration, necessitating structural repairs.
Between 2008 and 2014 all levels of the North Pad were fully rehabilitated and structurally retrofitted with a new structural framing system. The approximately $8.6 million phased rehabilitation of the North Pad structure was completed in 2014.In 2012, RJC completed a detailed updated condition assessment of the entire parking structure and formulated a phased rehabilitation program and capital plan, which addressed the immediate structural concerns and budgets needed to maintain the integrity of the garage structure and slab waterproofing over the next ten years.
The phased rehabilitation of this parking structure underwent $1M to $2M in restoration and repair work annually.
